Local Law Enforcement
Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not informed of any harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.
An important representative said the vandalism left him speechless and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
