The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
