Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
